Popcornflix Resurfaces After Chicken Soup for the Soul’s Collapse

Popcornflix is back online after disappearing last summer when Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment collapsed. Lowpass reported that the service was sold quietly before the company filed for bankruptcy.

Now owned by a trust linked to investor David Nagelberg, Popcornflix is running again with technical support from Future Today, the company behind Filmrise and The LEGO Channel.

I’m glad to see Popcornflix back. It was a longtime client of mine at Float Left, where we built several of its apps. When I worked with Screen Media (the service’s previous owner) and Popcornflix, they always wanted to compete with Crackle. It was interesting to see them eventually merge into the same company, and now it is even more interesting to see Popcornflix rise from the ashes while Crackle appears finished.

Redbox’s website and apps remain offline, and Crackle isn’t far behind. According to Lowpass, Amazon has petitioned the bankruptcy court to terminate its agreement with Chicken Soup for the Soul, which has over $4.8 million in unpaid AWS fees. The company hasn’t made a payment since September 2023. At this point, there’s no reason to expect either service to come back.
