Disney+ is taking a significant step toward becoming a comprehensive entertainment hub with the launch of a dedicated ESPN tile, providing subscribers seamless access to ESPN+ sports content alongside its rich library of movies, shows, and family programming. Building on the successful integration of Hulu into Disney+ in the U.S. and Star+ in Latin America, this latest addition creates a unified streaming experience designed to appeal to a wider audience.
“This launch really puts a cherry on top of a fantastic year of innovation at Disney+,” said Alisa Bowen, President of Disney+. “Earlier in the year, we made Hulu available in the Disney+ app, and now we’re doing the same for ESPN+. This gives our bundle subscribers one place to consume everything they love from all our brands.”
Enhanced Features for Bundle Subscribers
Subscribers to the Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ bundle in the U.S. can now access an ESPN hub within the Disney+ app, featuring a robust selection of sports content, including:
- Live Events: Over 5,000 live events in the first 90 days alone, including NFL, NBA, NHL, college basketball, and the Australian Open.
- Original Programming: New and classic ESPN content, such as 30 for 30 documentaries and ESPN Original Series.
- Extensive Sports Coverage: Access to more than 30,000 live sporting events annually, spanning MLB, WNBA, college sports, tennis, golf, and more.
- On-Demand Content: A comprehensive library of replays, highlights, and studio programming.
Benefits for Standalone Disney+ Subscribers
Standalone Disney+ subscribers also gain from this integration. They will have access to a curated selection of live sports events, ESPN Films, studio shows, and select Hulu content. Highlights include The Simpsons Funday Football animated Monday Night Football game, a Christmas Day NBA lineup, select 30 for 30 documentaries, and Day 1 coverage of the Australian Open. Hulu content includes titles like Shōgun, Will Trent, Solar Opposites, and Reservation Dogs.
“One of the things I’m most excited about with this launch is that we’re also making the ESPN and Hulu tiles visible to all subscribers,” Bowen emphasized. “That means our standalone Disney+ subscribers will have an easy way to discover everything we offer from these two incredible brands and the ability to upgrade their subscription for the full bundle experience.”
Setting the Stage for Future Growth
The integration of ESPN+ into Disney+ sets the stage for the launch of ESPN’s flagship direct-to-consumer product, expected in the fall of 2025. This development will expand Disney+’s sports offerings significantly. “There’s nothing like live sports,” said Lasker. “Live sports are storytelling in real time. They’re community, they bring people together for shared experiences that last lifetimes and generations. ESPN’s unrivaled portfolio of live rights will deliver for sports fans on Disney+.”
Strengthening Disney’s Streaming Strategy
This strategic move underscores Disney’s commitment to consolidating its streaming offerings and providing subscribers with a one-stop shop for entertainment. By integrating live sports, general entertainment, and family-friendly programming into a single platform, Disney+ enhances its appeal to a diverse audience. Bowen highlighted the broader vision: “This is about creating a seamless, unified experience for our subscribers. Whether it’s sports, entertainment, or family programming, we’re making it easier than ever to access everything Disney+ has to offer.”
The launch of the ESPN hub represents another milestone in Disney’s journey to redefine streaming, setting the foundation for future growth and innovation in the rapidly evolving media landscape.
