Warner Bros. Discovery and Criterion Collection have announced a multi-year extension of their licensing agreement, ensuring Criterion’s esteemed catalog of films remains available for streaming on Max. This deal reinforces Max’s position as a top destination for cinephiles, blending the Criterion Collection’s classic library with the platform’s expansive offerings of high-quality content.

Expanded Access to Criterion Collection Classics

As part of the deal, Max will continue streaming Criterion Collection’s extensive library, which is celebrated for its restoration and publication of classic and contemporary films in editions of the highest technical quality. The Criterion Collection features renowned titles such as Modern Times, Tokyo Story, In the Mood for Love, Night of the Living Dead, Seven Samurai, Babette’s Feast, Cleo From 5 to 7, and 8½. The latest agreement also brings new additions to Max, including Green Porno (2008) by Isabella Rossellini, Kiss of the Spiderwoman (1985) by Héctor Babenco, Mississippi Masala (1991) by Mira Nair, Open Your Eyes (1997) by Alejandro Amenábar, and Walkabout (1971) by Nicolas Roeg.

For fans of monster cinema, the deal includes three Godzilla titles: The Return of Godzilla (1984) by Koji Hashimoto, Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989) by Kazuki Ōmori, and Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991).

Max as the Hub for Classic Film Libraries

“We are excited to continue to bring the Criterion Collection’s catalog of top-quality films to our audiences,” said Royce Battleman, EVP of Content Acquisitions at Warner Bros. Discovery. “Both the existing and new additions to the collection provide Max viewers with the opportunity to experience cinematic excellence as part of our offering.”

Max has become synonymous with premium content, featuring titles from Warner Bros., Studio Ghibli, A24, Turner Classic Movies, and more. With multi-year licensing agreements for A24’s award-winning films (Everything Everywhere All at Once, Uncut Gems, The Whale) and Studio Ghibli’s masterpieces (Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, The Boy and the Heron), Max continues to bolster its reputation as the go-to platform for both contemporary and classic cinema.

The Criterion Collection: A Legacy of Excellence

For over 40 years, the Criterion Collection has been a beacon for movie enthusiasts, curating a catalog that transcends genres and eras. Notable films in its collection include L’Avventura, Eraserhead, The Last Emperor, A Room with a View, The Great Beauty, La Strada, Fanny and Alexander, and Cries and Whispers. The collection’s commitment to preserving and restoring cinematic history ensures its relevance for dedicated cinephiles and new audiences.

Max Subscription Options

Max subscriptions start at $10 per month for the ad-supported tier or $17 monthly for the ad-free experience. In addition to its film library, Max offers live news through CNN Max and sports content via the Bleacher Report add-on.

This renewed partnership underscores Max’s commitment to delivering a diverse and comprehensive selection of world-class cinema to its audience.
